Swansea City gave a special welcome to lifelong supporter Ken Wright, who has just been officially recognised as the world's longest-serving football referee. The 78-year-old visited the club's Fairwood training base and was then welcomed at the stadium on Saturday, September 12, the day of their 3-1 Championship win over Burnley.

The club issued a statement confirming the visit. "We welcomed referee and life-long Swans fan Ken Wright to the Stadium yesterday," they said. "He recently earned a Guinness World Record as the longest-serving football referee in history, officiating for 63 years."

Wright first took up the whistle as a 15-year-old in 1964. His debut match was Glantawe against South Gower at Cefn Coed Hospital, a rain-soaked affair that ended 13-4. Over a career now spanning 63 seasons, he has officiated at grounds like Highbury, White Hart Lane, and Stamford Bridge, and has been appointed to Swansea City matches. He remains active, still taking charge of games in the Swansea Senior League.

After his world record was confirmed, Wright described the achievement as "unbelievable". He said the thought of being the longest-serving referee across the world felt "unreal". The record was entered after many matches, with no indication he is ready to retire.

Swans legend meets record holder

At the stadium, Wright met Swans legend Alan Curtis. His visit coincided with a strong performance from Vitor Matos's side, who climbed back into the Championship's top two with the victory. The win, which saw goals from Adam Idah, Moussa Yeo, and Zan Vipotnik, moved Swansea to second place with 14 points from seven games.

Head coach Vitor Matos, who Wright watched put the squad through its paces at Fairwood, hailed the 3-1 win as a complete performance. He praised the attacking trio of Idah, Yeo, and Vipotnik, describing them as a "pressing monster". The result continued a solid run of form for the Swans, who have taken ten points from their last five matches.

Ken Wright's story is one of remarkable dedication to the game he loves, all while supporting his boyhood club. Swansea City's next challenge is an away trip to face Lincoln on Saturday, September 19, as they look to maintain their promotion push from second spot.
