Swansea City delivered a dominant away performance to beat Derby County 3-0 at Pride Park in the Championship. The victory on Saturday 29 August 2026 keeps Vitor Matos's side unbeaten and lifts them to third in the table with seven points from three games.
Joseph Opoku opened the scoring in just the second minute with a deflected shot, assisted by Ji-Sung Eom. The summer signing from Belgian club Zulte Waragem doubled his tally for the Swans before being forced off with an injury midway through the first half. Ji-Sung Eom then made it 2-0 just before half-time, tapping in from a yard out after Adam Idah's header from a Melker Widell cross was saved.
Swansea started with incredible intensity. Derby's Ryan Hedges had a goal disallowed after just 18 seconds, but that was as close as the hosts came. The Rams failed to register a single shot in the opening half-hour as Swansea took command. Opoku almost added a spectacular second with an acrobatic volley from a Stephen Welsh cross that cleared the bar.
Manager Vitor Matos was pleased with his team's resilience. "We started the game really well and scored," Matos told reporters. "There were moments when Derby pushed us back but we coped with their threat." The Swans have now scored five goals this season while conceding only one, giving them a strong +4 goal difference.
Derby manager John Eustace made a triple substitution at half-time in a bid to change the game, but his side struggled to create clear chances. Lewis Travis and Charlie Taylor both saw long-range efforts deflected wide. Max Johnston found the side-netting with a second-half shot, but a comeback never materialised.
Eustace did not hide his disappointment after the final whistle. "I can understand the fans' frustrations 100 per cent because the performance was unacceptable and I'm really disappointed," he said. The Rams are still searching for their first win of the new campaign.
Ji-Sung Eom was instrumental, providing an assist and scoring his second league goal since November. The South Korea international combined well with Moussa Yeo down the left flank throughout. Ronald put the seal on the win in second-half stoppage time, converting after Stephen Eustaquio's shot was blocked.
Substitute Zan Vipotnik had a chance to add a fourth but shot straight at Derby goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterstrom. The Swedish international had earlier spilled a Melker Widell shot that led to Eom's goal. Adam Idah also went close with a far-post effort that drifted wide.
The three points are vital for Swansea's early-season ambitions. They now sit just two points behind league leaders Charlton Athletic. This strong defensive display, their second clean sheet, provides a solid platform.
Attention now turns swiftly to their next fixture. Swansea City host Watford at home on Tuesday, 1 September 2026. Watford currently sit ninth in the table, making it another significant test. The full schedule is available on our fixtures page. Maintaining this momentum will be key if they are to close the gap at the top.
