Swansea City missed a chance to go three points clear at the top of the Championship after being held to a 0-0 draw by Wrexham at the Swansea.com Stadium on Saturday. The result leaves Vitor Matos's side just one point ahead of the chasing pack after five games, with a record of three wins, one draw, and no defeats from their opening four matches.

Swansea had started the day as league leaders with 10 points and the division's best defensive record, having conceded just one goal. But they couldn't find a way past a resolute Wrexham side, who arrived off their first win of the season at Millwall. The Swans made three changes from their previous outing, while Phil Parkinson's visitors made five, including handing a debut to £6.5 million deadline-day signing Callum O'Hare from Sheffield United.

The game's major flashpoint arrived in the second half when Ben Cabango lunged in on debutant O'Hare. Referee Elliot Bell showed Cabango a yellow card for the challenge, a decision that drew criticism from Wrexham's manager. Phil Parkinson also felt his side should have had a penalty when a ball from Melker Widell struck the hand of Swansea's Ryan Longman, but no spot-kick was given.

Clear chances were scarce for both teams. Swansea's best opportunity fell to Zan Vipotnik nine minutes from time, but he slid Moussa Yeo's cross straight into the arms of goalkeeper Anthony Patterson. At the other end, Kieffer Moore tested Lawrence Vigouroux in stoppage time, and Josh Windass, one of four substitutes introduced after 62 minutes, saw a driven effort deflect wide off Max Cleworth.

Swansea head coach Vitor Matos expressed mixed feelings. "Happy with the clean sheet. Keeping clean sheets is quite important for building momentum," he said. "At the other end, of course I’m not happy because we could’ve won the game."

Wrexham's Phil Parkinson focused on the officiating. "A couple of things. Firstly Cabango grabs Kieffer [Moore] around the neck on the halfway line." he stated.

The draw means Swansea City remain top with 10 points from five games, claiming a goal difference of +6 after scoring seven and conceding just one. They now face a quick turnaround with an away trip to face Southampton on Tuesday, September 8th. The Saints currently sit 18th in the table, presenting another test for Matos's squad.

Swansea will have to handle this fixture without two sidelined players, Cameron Burgess and Gonçalo Franco. The full fixtures schedule shows a busy period ahead. Despite the dropped points, the Swans' strong start has them in a promising position, which fans can track via the latest standings.

The pre-match atmosphere at the Swansea.com Stadium was provided by the Pontarddulais Male Voice Choir, who performed a rendition of Max Boyce's 'Hymns and Arias'. Notably absent, however, were Wrexham's celebrity co-owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, as well as their high-profile investors Snoop Dogg and Luka Modric. Swansea's focus now shifts entirely to preparing for the challenge at St Mary's Stadium in midweek.
