Stephen Eustaquio is a fitness doubt for Swansea City's key Championship trip to Portsmouth on Tuesday after picking up a groin injury. The midfielder felt discomfort and was substituted in the 73rd minute of Saturday's emphatic 4-0 victory over Blackburn Rovers, a match in which he scored the opening goal in the 11th minute.
Head coach Vitor Matos confirmed the issue and said the club must assess its severity. "He felt discomfort in his groin, so we need to assess and really see the extent of that," Matos told reporters.
Eustaquio had opened the scoring, netting his second goal of the season, before being forced off. His potential absence compounds a midfield reshuffle, with Marko Stamenic also missing the Blackburn game due to illness. The club hopes Stamenic will be back involved against Pompey. Further absences are confirmed, with winger Ronald definitely out and fellow wide man Moussa Yeo also expected to miss the fixture.
The injury concern comes as Swansea sit second in the Championship table with 26 points from 13 games, a record of eight wins, two draws and three losses. They are just two points behind leaders Middlesbrough. Their recent form shows three wins and two losses from their last five matches, a strong rebound from a 5-0 loss to QPR on October 24. That heavy defeat was preceded by a 1-0 loss to West Ham on October 17 and followed by the 4-0 win over Blackburn on October 31. The team has scored 20 goals and conceded 13 this season. The next match, away to Portsmouth on Tuesday 3 November, is a key test in that promotion push.
In the comprehensive victory over Blackburn, Joseph Amankwaah Opoku scored in the 32nd minute after assisting Eustaquio's opener, with Filip Lissah and Ross Stewart adding further goals. The club's top scorer this season is A. Idah with four goals in 12 appearances. Vitor Matos will provide a final update on Eustaquio's fitness before the squad travels to Fratton Park.
