Swansea City have completed the signing of Canadian international midfielder Stephen Eustáquio. The 29-year-old joins from Portuguese giants Porto on a two-year contract, with the club holding an option for a further season.
Stephen Eustáquio said the presence of head coach Vitor Matos, who previously worked at Porto, was a major draw. "It was almost a no-brainer for me," Eustáquio said in the club's announcement. "I know what I'm going to get here, so I'm very happy that I made this decision."
Eustáquio's World Cup impact
Eustáquio arrives fresh from a standout World Cup campaign with Canada, where he scored a stoppage-time winner against South Africa in the round of 32. He also captained the side in several matches. "This summer was amazing," he said. "For us as a country it was a dream come true to go so far."
The midfielder has 61 caps for his country and brings extensive experience from over 150 appearances during four-and-a-half years at Porto. He also had a brief loan spell with Los Angeles FC earlier this year. Eustáquio acknowledged the challenge ahead with a Swansea side that finished 11th in the Championship last term. "The dream of being part of a big club looking to get back to the top league was the big attraction," he stated. He believes focusing game by game can create a special atmosphere at the Swansea.com Stadium.
He will wear the number 46 shirt and could make his debut this weekend. Swansea face Derby County as they look to improve on their mid-table finish. Fans can track the team's progress and upcoming matches on the club's fixtures page, while the latest squad information is also available.
