Swansea City are working to secure a centre-back and a midfielder before the transfer window closes. Manager Vitor Matos described the process as 'playing a chess match in a storm' in a report by Tom Coleman for Wales Online this week.
Injuries to Cameron Burgess and Ben Cabango have made defensive recruitment the top priority. The club had been linked with a move for Wrexham's Conor Coady, but insiders quickly dismissed that speculation. A permanent signing is preferred, but the loan market remains an option.
Swansea legend Lee Trundle told reporters that the injuries force the club to aim higher. "Because of the injuries to Cabango and Burgess, who is out long term, Swansea will have to get a better calibre of player in," Trundle said. He argued the situation requires a starting-quality defender, not only squad cover. "Now, they have to go and get a proper centre-half."
This need is reflected in the current squad situation, where defensive options are stretched. Securing at least one new defender would represent a significant step towards a successful end to the window for Matos and his staff.
Adding creativity in central midfield is another objective for the Swans. The club had reportedly shown interest in Valencia's Andre Almeida, but Spanish Celta Vigo is now a more likely destination for the player. Another target, Ousseynou Fall Seck, also appears headed elsewhere.
Matos is keen to bolster his midfield options to add more invention to the team's play. This search comes as the club prepares for a challenging run of Championship fixtures.
Despite the arrival of Ross Stewart, Swansea City have no plans to sell star striker Zan Vipotnik in this window. Hull City saw a £10 million bid rejected earlier, and the club's valuation is understood to be roughly double that figure. No club has yet met that demand.
While a substantial offer would boost the club's finances, the ideal scenario is to keep Vipotnik alongside Stewart and Adam Idah. That trio would give Swansea a strike force to rival any in the Championship, a key asset for the campaign ahead.
Winger Florian Bianchini has been told he may need to leave to revive his career. Matos indicated a permanent move would be best for all parties, though recouping the near £2 million paid for him seems unlikely. Offers for Ronald and Zeidane Inoussa might be considered, but the squad demands of the Championship could see them retained.
The transfer window closes on Tuesday night, leaving Swansea City with a busy few days to address their key needs in defence and midfield. The club's next Championship match is at home to Preston North End on September 16th.
