Vitor Matos has described Lawrence Vigouroux as one of the most consistent goalkeepers in the Championship. The defender's praise for the goalkeeper comes after a 1-0 home defeat to West Ham United, a result that ended Swansea City's unbeaten start at their stadium.
Divine Mukasa's 34th-minute strike was the difference on 17 October, but Vigouroux's performance kept his side in the contest. He made a string of important saves, including a key intervention late in the first half, and was named the star man despite the loss.
Vigouroux's reliability
Matos, who has played alongside the 32-year-old for over a season, emphasised the goalkeeper's importance to the squad. "He is one of the big souls of the Swansea City side," Matos said. His performances speak for themselves and he is one of the most consistent goalkeepers in the league.
Vigouroux's commanding presence and concentration provided a platform for Swansea, who remain second in the Championship with 23 points from 11 games. The defeat was their first in five matches, a run of form that includes four wins and has kept them just two points behind leaders Middlesbrough.
Squad effort and setbacks
Other players contributed notable moments in a tight game. Ben Cabango made a perfectly-timed tackle in the first half that drew a huge cheer, while Josh Tymon delivered several dangerous crosses from the left flank. Ronald Pereira Martins, who scored the late winner at Millwall in the previous game, whistled a shot just wide and sent a header across goal in added time.
However, the team also faced setbacks. Ronald has been ruled out for six to eight weeks with a hamstring injury, a significant blow to the attacking options. Marko Stamenic, Jay Fulton, Goncalo Franco and Moussa Yeo were all substituted during the match, with Stamenic's early error leading to the only goal.
Despite the result, Swansea's defensive record this season remains strong, having conceded only eight goals. They have scored 16, with Adam Idah leading the way with four goals. The immediate focus shifts to maintaining their position at the top end of the table.
Swansea City travel to face Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road on Saturday 24 October, with the hosts currently ninth in the Championship.
