Marko Stamenic credits the people at Swansea City with helping him fall back in love with football after a traumatic personal year. The midfielder opens up ahead of the club's first home game of the new Championship season.
Stamenic joined Swansea from Nottingham Forest twelve months ago. His first year in Wales was overshadowed by the sudden death of his father, Nikola, last October, a man he calls the main figure in his football development.
"I think having the people around me in this club, it really helped me cross that hurdle, to find my love again for the game," Stamenic said. He described the period as one of many ups and downs, with more challenges off the pitch than on it.
World Cup and stability
The 24-year-old then represented New Zealand at the World Cup in the USA this summer, fulfilling a childhood dream he once shared with his father. He featured in all three of the All Whites' group stage matches.
International duty meant a shortened break, but Stamenic says he returned refreshed and was a key figure in Swansea's opening day 2-1 comeback win at Stoke City last weekend. Playing in a more advanced role, he was involved in the build-up to both goals.
For a player accustomed to moving clubs annually, being at the same team for a second consecutive season brings welcome stability. "It's nice to have some stability now, being familiar with the club, being able to help new players come in," he added. "I feel like I'm ready to take the next step in my career in the Championship."
Promotion the clear aim
Among those new faces is his international teammate Elijah Just, whose move from Motherwell Stamenic encouraged. He believes the attacking midfielder will show his quality.
With the squad strengthened by other additions like Stephen Welsh and Ross Stewart, who is available this weekend, Stamenic is clear on the collective ambition. "There's no hiding the fact that all of our goals and aspirations are to get promoted," he stated.
He insists the daily focus remains on training and the next match, which is Saturday's Championship fixture against Sheffield United at the Swansea.com Stadium.
Stamenic's contract with Swansea City runs until the summer of 2028.
