Elijah Just believes he has yet to show his best for Swansea City despite settling in quickly after his move. The New Zealand international is enjoying a new midfield role as the Swans sit joint-top of the Championship with 14 points from seven games, level on points with leaders Burnley.
Just, 26, joined the Welsh club on a permanent deal after a successful loan spell at Scottish Premiership side Motherwell and a World Cup campaign where he scored three goals for his country. He has been used more centrally by manager Vitor Matos, a tactical shift from his wider role in Scotland. "It's been really good so far," Just said. "The boys have made me feel really welcome and I've enjoyed it."
He credited fellow Kiwi Marko Stamenic and defender Stephen Welsh with helping him adapt on and off the pitch. "I think I've settled in quite quickly," he added. "Having Marko here has been massive. We room together on away trips and he's shown me around." The physicality of the Championship is similar to the Scottish Premiership, he noted, but the intensity and technical quality across the division are significantly higher. With the schedule demanding so many games in a short period, it requires constant focus and recovery.
"At Motherwell I played a bit wider and had a bit more freedom to drift," Just explained. "Here, we've got out-and-out wingers who stay high and wide, so I think a central midfield role suits me a little bit more. I'm happy playing that eight or ten role, getting on the ball and linking the play." His work-rate and ability to connect defence and attack in forward areas have already been noted by the coaching staff and supporters.
Personally, he feels there is much more to come as he adapts to the new system and league. "I think I'm still adjusting." The team's positive energy, built on a strong start that includes a notable 3-1 home win over Burnley, has helped his integration.
Swansea's next test is away to Lincoln City this weekend before the international break. With key players like defender Cameron Burgess and wing-back Josh Key currently sidelined with minor injuries, the squad's depth will be tested. Manager Vitor Matos has emphasised the need for every player to be ready. Just is prepared to contribute in whatever role is required as the Swans aim to maintain their position at the top of the table.
